Veromessor
Water and founding in V. pergandei.
A species study of founding queens, with practical observations kept separate from experimental results.
Veromessor pergandei founding and desiccation research; not a universal nest-temperature protocol.
Decorative illustration · not an identification referenceDesert is not a moisture setting
In Johnson’s V. pergandei experiments, founding queens supplied with more water had higher survival and brood production. These experiments concern this species and life stage, not a tested hydration protocol for every desert ant.

In your setup
Monitor the reservoir and measured nest conditions. Provide access to drinking water and avoid changing the whole setup at once. Laboratory temperatures in a study are experimental conditions, not a recommended household target.
Queen associations vary geographically
The study describes geographic variation in single- and multiple-queen founding. It does not establish a safe procedure for combining unfamiliar captive queens.

In your setup
Confirm species and origin before selecting a founding routine. Keep queens or colonies separate unless a suitably qualified, species-specific protocol establishes otherwise.
For worker colonies, record seed use and other food acceptance, hydration checks and mold observations. Keep stored food inspectable. Use dated worker and brood estimates; do not promise workers on a particular day or a final colony size from one study.
Record observations without predicting a flight
In your setup
A winged ant at a nest, a flying swarm and a queen on the ground are different observations. Record the local date, approximate area and identification confidence. This guide does not provide a regional flight forecast.
Build a record for this colony
In your setup
Log dated food responses, reservoir and containment checks, and worker and brood estimates. Mark estimates as estimates and leave unknown facts blank. These notes do not fill in or alter your saved colony profile.
Before acquiring or moving ants
Consult the library’s movement guidance and official sources and the authorities relevant to your location.
Sources and review
Research statements link to their sources. “In your setup” contains practical keeper suggestions, not findings tested for every species. Source check: 2026-10-17.
