Solenopsis

An identification with real consequences.

Recognize the limits of a fire-ant label and check official movement guidance.

Imported fire-ant risk and identification context; not an acquisition or captive-founding guide.

Do not identify by a sting alone

The UF/IFAS account distinguishes imported S. invicta from other fire ants. Worker variation and queen social forms make a simple size or color rule unreliable. A genus label is not enough to establish either species or legal status.

In your setup

Photograph from a safe distance and seek regional identification. Avoid disturbing suspected fire-ant nests or handling workers and queens. This page does not recommend collecting or acquiring imported fire ants.

Check current restrictions before movement

USDA APHIS maintains an imported-fire-ant quarantine program covering regulated articles from affected areas. Boundaries and movement requirements can change; this is not a worldwide ban on every Solenopsis.

In your setup

Use the current official guidance rather than an old state list. Do not transport soil, plants or nest material from a suspected infestation without the appropriate advice. Keep existing captive ants contained; do not release them.

An observation is useful without collection

The species account discusses flights in relation to suitable weather. It does not establish a guaranteed flight date at your location.

In your setup

Report the observation type, local date, approximate area and identification confidence. Leave the species uncertain if necessary. A map report is not permission to collect, transport or release ants.

Build a record for this colony

In your setup

Log dated food responses, reservoir and containment checks, and worker and brood estimates. Mark estimates as estimates and leave unknown facts blank. These notes do not fill in or alter your saved colony profile.

Sources and review

Research statements link to their sources. “In your setup” contains practical keeper suggestions, not findings tested for every species. Source check: 2026-10-17.
