Prenolepis
A different seasonal rhythm.
Winter-ant natural history challenges the usual warm-season assumptions.
Prenolepis imparis in the UF/IFAS account, with regional differences kept explicit.
Decorative illustration · not an identification referenceWinter ant does not mean one cold routine
UF/IFAS describes cool-season foraging and warm-season estivation in P. imparis. Timing varies with latitude. Florida observations cannot be turned into a calendar for the whole range.

In your setup
Do not force a generic winter-rest program or heat and dry the nest to imitate a summer pause. Establish species and origin, then keep dated notes on activity, brood and measured conditions.
Separate food storage from a nickname
The account describes an omnivorous diet including honeydew and dead invertebrates. Enlarged, fat-storing workers are not the same as the repletes of true honeypot ants.

In your setup
For a worker colony, provide drinking water and manageable carbohydrate and insect portions. Record food acceptance during active and quiet periods rather than increasing meals automatically.
Record what you actually saw in a flight report: a flying swarm, winged ants at a nest or a queen on the ground are different observations. Do not infer a local flight from a seasonal nickname.
Record observations without predicting a flight
In your setup
A winged ant at a nest, a flying swarm and a queen on the ground are different observations. Record the local date, approximate area and identification confidence. This guide does not provide a regional flight forecast.
Build a record for this colony
In your setup
Log dated food responses, reservoir and containment checks, and worker and brood estimates. Mark estimates as estimates and leave unknown facts blank. These notes do not fill in or alter your saved colony profile.
Before acquiring or moving ants
Consult the library’s movement guidance and official sources and the authorities relevant to your location.
Sources and review
Research statements link to their sources. “In your setup” contains practical keeper suggestions, not findings tested for every species. Source check: 2026-10-17.
