Pheidole
Majors tell part of the story.
Observe worker roles without assuming every big-headed ant is a seed specialist.
Florida monograph and worker-shape research; neither supplies a universal growth deadline.
Decorative illustration · not an identification referenceBig heads do not establish one diet
The abstract of the Florida Pheidole monograph discusses seed collection, scavenging and predation, with some species tending sap-feeding insects. This regional source does not establish a single diet for Pheidole worldwide or a seed-only diet for an unidentified colony.

In your setup
For a worker colony, record carbohydrate and insect acceptance separately. Only add seeds appropriate to an identified species and watch whether they are used or left to spoil. Maintain drinking water independently of food.
Count workers without imposing a deadline
Worker-shape research distinguishes major and minor subcastes in Pheidole. The presence of large-headed workers does not establish when every colony will produce them.

In your setup
Record majors as an optional note alongside the total worker estimate. Do not promise the first major at a particular age or worker count.
Plan ventilation and feeding access for the smallest minors, not just the largest majors. Record escapes or gaps as setup observations and correct containment before expanding a nest.
Record observations without predicting a flight
In your setup
A winged ant at a nest, a flying swarm and a queen on the ground are different observations. Record the local date, approximate area and identification confidence. This guide does not provide a regional flight forecast.
Build a record for this colony
In your setup
Log dated food responses, reservoir and containment checks, and worker and brood estimates. Mark estimates as estimates and leave unknown facts blank. These notes do not fill in or alter your saved colony profile.
Before acquiring or moving ants
Consult the library’s movement guidance and official sources and the authorities relevant to your location.
Sources and review
Research statements link to their sources. “In your setup” contains practical keeper suggestions, not findings tested for every species. Source check: 2026-10-17.
- Naves (1985) · Monograph of Pheidole in Florida
Repository abstract covers varied habitats and diets; detailed species accounts were not used to set captive targets.

Primary comparison of minor and major worker morphology; not a colony development timetable.
Keep your own field notes.
Record care, dated counts and what you observe. Species and counts can stay blank when you do not know them.
