Liometopum

Velvety tree ants and water loss.

Western US tree ants where humidity and temperature affected worker survival in a laboratory study.

L. occidentale and L. luctuosum laboratory survival research and genus overview; not a tested humidity protocol.

Humidity mattered in the laboratory

Hoey-Chamberlain and Rust exposed workers of L. luctuosum and L. occidentale to different temperatures and relative humidity. Survival of both species fell as temperature rose and increased with higher humidity. L. luctuosum survived better overall.

In your setup

Treat these as experimental conditions for workers, not a household target. Keep water available, record measured humidity and temperature, and note any worker losses with dates.

Two species, different ranges

The same study describes L. occidentale as a lowland species and L. luctuosum as restricted to mountain coniferous forests in the southern part of its range, both in the western United States.

In your setup

Record the species and collection region with your identification confidence. A genus-level label does not settle which conditions apply.

Record observations without predicting a flight

In your setup

A winged ant at a nest, a flying swarm and a queen on the ground are different observations. Record the local date, approximate area and identification confidence. This guide does not provide a regional flight forecast.

Build a record for this colony

In your setup

Log dated food responses, reservoir and containment checks, and worker and brood estimates. Mark estimates as estimates and leave unknown facts blank. These notes do not fill in or alter your saved colony profile.
