Lasius

Similar workers, different beginnings.

A garden-ant label leaves important questions about founding and seasonal care unanswered.

Evolutionary evidence across Lasius; no universal queen-only founding or cold-rest prescription.

Resolve the founding question first

This study identifies repeated origins of temporary social parasitism in Lasius. The genus includes strategies that cannot be reduced to a single instruction for a newly found queen.

In your setup

Keep uncertain queens identified to genus until better evidence is available. Do not add workers or combine queens based on color or a generic care sheet. Ask for species-level help.

Write down what you can observe

The evolutionary study does not establish feeding schedules, local flight months or a standard winter-rest treatment.

In your setup

For an established worker colony, offer manageable carbohydrate and insect food, keep drinking water available and record what is accepted. Check small feeding gaps and remove spoiled leftovers.

Record local dates, brood stages and measured nest conditions. Species and origin should guide seasonal research; neither a northern nor a southern routine should be assigned from Lasius alone.

Record observations without predicting a flight

In your setup

A winged ant at a nest, a flying swarm and a queen on the ground are different observations. Record the local date, approximate area and identification confidence. This guide does not provide a regional flight forecast.

Build a record for this colony

In your setup

Log dated food responses, reservoir and containment checks, and worker and brood estimates. Mark estimates as estimates and leave unknown facts blank. These notes do not fill in or alter your saved colony profile.

Research statements link to their sources. “In your setup” contains practical keeper suggestions, not findings tested for every species. Source check: 2026-10-17.

Publisher abstract: temporary social parasitism and fungiculture evolved twice; detailed husbandry is not established by this abstract.

Record care, dated counts and what you observe. Species and counts can stay blank when you do not know them.
