Formica

Identify before choosing a founding method.

Some Formica found independently; other lineages have very different beginnings.

A global evolutionary study explains founding diversity; it is not an instruction for introducing host ants.

One genus does not mean one beginning

The study finds both independent founding and socially parasitic lineages within Formica. It also revises relationships among familiar species groups. A queen-only setup is not automatically suitable for every Formica.

In your setup

Seek identification before assuming a lone queen should raise workers without help. Do not experiment by mixing colonies or supplying captured host workers from this page.

Keep the evidence with the colony

The research concerns evolutionary relationships and founding strategies, not captive feeding intervals or winter temperatures.

In your setup

For a worker colony, record food accepted, drinking-water checks and brood changes. Provide small, accessible carbohydrate and insect portions and remove spoiled material.

Keep collection region and identification confidence with your notes. Confirm species-specific seasonal needs before choosing cooling or heating. Log actual conditions instead of treating slower growth as a reason to increase heat.

Record observations without predicting a flight

In your setup

A winged ant at a nest, a flying swarm and a queen on the ground are different observations. Record the local date, approximate area and identification confidence. This guide does not provide a regional flight forecast.

Build a record for this colony

In your setup

Log dated food responses, reservoir and containment checks, and worker and brood estimates. Mark estimates as estimates and leave unknown facts blank. These notes do not fill in or alter your saved colony profile.
