Dorymyrmex

Pyramid ants of open, hot ground.

Fast, heat-tolerant ground nesters; keep identification and colony details tentative.

North American Dorymyrmex natural history from genus and species accounts; not a nest-temperature prescription.

Open ground and crater nests

AntWiki describes Dorymyrmex as ground-nesting ants of drier habitats, often nesting in open areas with an irregular mound of loose soil at the entrance. The D. insanus account describes heat-tolerant foragers that recruit quickly to food and take honeydew and other liquids.

In your setup

Field heat tolerance is not an enclosure target. Record measured nest conditions and whether foragers use the food you offer. These are small, fast workers, so check that the setup is escape-proof.

Interactions with fire ants

In a Texas field study, D. flavus increased after imported fire ants were reduced with bait and showed antagonistic behavior toward S. invicta. This is one species in one study, not evidence that pyramid ants control fire ants generally.

Record observations without predicting a flight

In your setup

A winged ant at a nest, a flying swarm and a queen on the ground are different observations. Record the local date, approximate area and identification confidence. This guide does not provide a regional flight forecast.

Log dated food responses, reservoir and containment checks, and worker and brood estimates. Mark estimates as estimates and leave unknown facts blank. These notes do not fill in or alter your saved colony profile.
