Camponotus

More than a carpenter-ant label.

Use the species and its origin to interpret growth, food response and seasonal change.

Florida carpenter ants C. floridanus and C. tortuganus are examples, not a protocol for the whole genus.

A large genus needs a specific name

UF/IFAS treats two Florida species separately and describes nesting in existing spaces. The carpenter-ant common name does not establish that every colony needs a wooden nest.

In your setup

Record species confidence and geographic origin. Do not replace an unknown species with C. floridanus simply because the keeper lives in Florida.

Follow feeding response, not worker size

The Florida account describes sweet resources and insects among food sources. It is a regional natural-history reference rather than a feeding timetable.

In your setup

For worker colonies, provide accessible drinking water and small carbohydrate and insect portions. Record what is taken and remove spoiled leftovers. Large workers are not a reason to supply live prey or oversized meals.

Track workers and brood as dated estimates. A small colony can change slowly; do not use an internet development deadline as proof of a failed queen.

Record observations without predicting a flight

In your setup

A winged ant at a nest, a flying swarm and a queen on the ground are different observations. Record the local date, approximate area and identification confidence. This guide does not provide a regional flight forecast.

Build a record for this colony

In your setup

Log dated food responses, reservoir and containment checks, and worker and brood estimates. Mark estimates as estimates and leave unknown facts blank. These notes do not fill in or alter your saved colony profile.

Sources and review

Research statements link to their sources. “In your setup” contains practical keeper suggestions, not findings tested for every species. Source check: 2026-10-17.
